Clinical Application of New Innovative Artificial Diamond Blades
Department of Ophthalmology, University of Ulm, Germany
Purpose: The application of diamond knifes has increased the cutting performance in ophthalmic surgery. The lateral geometry of the blade, its thickness and the sharpness of the cutting edge are limited by the abrasive diamond polishing process.
Method: New artificial diamond blades are mostly free of these limitations. The mechanical properties of these synthetic diamond knifes are almost equal to those of natural diamond and the surface of this film is mirror-like after deposition without the need for post-polishing. The shape of the blade can be defined concerning the surgeons proposal.
Results: The knife production results in highly reproducible, freeformed diamond blades. A new generation of diamond blades with free choice of blade shape and thickness is in clinical application showing excellent performance and sharpness.
Conclusions: The availability of new artificial diamond knifes offers the surgeon for the first time the possibility to design blades with a geometry close to their personal needs.
