The Scheimpflug Camera – Clinical Experiences with the OCULUS Pentacam Scheimpflug System

Struck H. G.
Department of Ophthalmology , Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg, Halle/Saale, Germany

Purpose: The Oculus Pentacam Scheimpflugsystem is established in clinical practice since 2002. Since February 2003 we are able to work with this system.
Method: (Technical Equipment) The rotating measuring process supplies pictures in three dimensions. Using the taken images, the system calculates a 3D-Model of the anterior eye segment. All further information is deduced from this 3D-Model. The Pentacam contains five different functions, the Scheimpflug image, the cataract analysis by the densitometry of the lens, the 3D-chamber calculation, the pachymetry and the corneal topography.
Results: Because of the development status our major task was to check the system under real conditions. First of all the set up of the system required measurements of about hundred lenses. During that initial batch we gathered our first experiences with the system and provided those to the Oculus development centre. Further stages of development improved the usability in order to conduct clinical studies. Therefore we were able to start a first clinical trial to evaluate the intraocular position of the foldable hydrophilic acryl lens CenterflexTM. 21 patients were examined 1.3 and 6 months after cataract surgery. The lens position was detected by Scheimpflug slit images using the Oculus Pentacam and by the Orbscan system. Only a slight postoperative anterior lens shifting in the f
