Plasma Homocysteine is Elevated in Patients with Open-angle Glaucoma

Purpose: Homocysteine can induce alterations in extracellular matrix and neuronal cell death that are characteristic findings in glaucoma. Moderate hyperhomocysteinaemia has been related to genetic or non-genetic risk factors that alter enzyme activity in the transsulfuration or remethylation pathways. This study was therefore undertaken to investigate whether homocysteine levels are altered in patients suffering from primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) or secondary open-angle glaucoma due to pseudoexfoliation (PEXG).
