Endothel Cell Findings after Standard and Wave-front-guided LASIK

Purpose: To correct high-order aberrations wave-front-guided LASIK-treatments use smaller spot sizes than standard procedures. That's why more laser pulses are necessary to perform wave-front-guided LASIK than with a classic sphero-cylindrical ablation profile. This greater amount of laser pulses and its energy can lead to endothelial damage.
Method: 60 patients were treated with standard or wave-front-guided-LASIK by using a Keracor 217z-Excimerlaser. The corneal endothelium of these patients was investigated pre- and up to 6 months postoperatively.
Results: Up to 6 months postoperatively no significant difference in the total endothelium cell count or in the number of hexagonal cells between the pre- and postoperative measurements were detected. Also no significant difference in endothelial cell counts was found between standard and wave-front-guided LASIK.
Conclusions: LASIK-treatment does not provoke measurable, statistically significant endothelial cell damage. This result is independent whether standard or wave-front-guided LASIK with a greater amount of laser pulses was performed.
