LASIK for the Treatment of Residual Refraction Errors after the Implantation of Phakic Intraocular Lenses

Purpose: Between January 1999 and March 2003 260 phakic intraocular lenses (pIOL) were implanted for the treatment of high myopia and hyperopia. During the follow-up period laser-in-situ-keratomileusis (LASIK) was performed in 5 eyes (1,9%) to correct residual refraction errors.
Method: Five eyes of 5 patients had LASIK 7.4 months (4 to 11 months) after implantation of a pIOL. The patients were examined before and 3 months after the pIOL implantation. Further examinations were performed before and 1 month after LASIK. Mean patient age was 40 years (ranging from 29-50 years). Prior to the pIOL implantation 4 patients had a myopic astigmatism [mean preoperative spherical equivalent (SE) -9.95 ± 2.74 D (-7.14 to -13.3 D)]. One patient was treated for a hyperopic astigmatism (preoperative spherical equivalent +4,75 D). In three cases an iris-claw Artisan pIOL (OPHTEC) had been implanted, in two cases a phakic posterior chamber lens (ICL, STAAR).
Results: After the implantation of the pIOL SE decreased, but the mean astigmatism increased (preoperative mean astigmatism -1.55 ± 0.78 D; postoperative mean astigmatism -1.75 ± 0.64 D). Before the follow-up treatment with LASIK 20% of the patients had an uncorrected visual acuity of Zurück | Back
