Klinik und Poliklinik für Augenheilkunde, Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Universität, Greifswald

Purpose: The injection of local anaesthesia before upper lid blepharoplasty is felt unpleasant and painful by some patients.
Method: In an intraindividual randomized prospective study 14 patients with upper lid blepharoplasty on both sides were examined. Before operation the EMLA-Creme was put on one side. A Tegaderm plaster was fixed on the upper eyelid by a special method to protect the eye. The pain sensibility was checked before and after using EMLA-Creme, during the infiltration of anaesthesia and the operation. The patients scored their subjective pain on a scale from 0 to 3. (0=none, 1= low, 2=medium, 3=strong pain). The subjective and objective compatibility of EMLA-Creme was also evaluated.
Results: The sensitivity before putting on EMLA-Creme was equal at all patients on both sides. After applying there was shown a recent difference of the sides. No or low pain was felt on the treated side by all patients, on the non-treated side 6 patients felt low, 6 patients medium and 2 patients strong pain. During the infiltration of anaesthesia 12 patients reported low and 2 patients medium pain on the treated side, meanwhile on the non-treated side 5 patients reported low, 4 patients medium and 5 patients strong pain. During the operation all patients felt low pain on the treated side, but 9 patients low, 5 medium and 1 strong pain on the non-treated side. The subjective compatibility o
