Macular Pigment and AMD: Specific Risk profiles in different subtypes of AMD?

Trieschmann M., Wachter A., Spital G., Pauleikhoff D.
Augenabteilung am St. Franziskus Hospital, Münster

Purpose: Patients with early age related maculardegeneration (AMD) show significantly more often lower concentrations of macular pigment (MP) than healthy patients do. This study investigates whether a correlation between specific MP pattern and subtypes of AMD exists.
Method: Images of fundus autofluorescence were obtained in 400 persons (103 healthy patients, 297 with AMD) and the concentration of MP was computed as relative optical density values from the mean grey scale intensity around the fovea. The maximum central concentration of MP ("peak") the volume of optical density values within the central 150µm radius (central volume, "C") and the total amount of MP within 2mm radius around the fovea (total MP-Volume, "T") were measured. The C/T ratio characterizes the distribution of MP in the perifoveal area.
Results: Healthy eyes show higher peaks than those with AMD (mean 0,58), fellow eyes of geographic atrophy (GA) show the lowest central MP concentration (mean 0,45), those of pigmentepithelium-detachment (PED) 0,58, of CNV 0,53, of early AMD 0,5 (p<0,001). The amount of MP within the central 150µm radius ("C") is also the lowest in fellow eyes of GA (mean 121), (healthy eyes 162, fellow eyes of PED 141, of CNV 139, of early onset AMD 135,3 (p<0,0001)). The C/T ratio shows the distribution of MP mostly in perifoveal area and not in the centrum in fellow eyes of G
