Abstract

Safer Vitreo-retinal Instrumentation

Schrage N.
Dept. of Ophthalmology, University Hospital, Aachen

Purpose: Safety in vitreo-retinal surgery has been improved by maschine modifications. Up to now we use instruments that if unattended introduced into the eye can cause severe damage espacially at the posterior pole if slipped from the surgeons hands. Further leaking sclerotomies in long during surgeries are source of diffculties with fluid exchanges within the eye.
Method: We modify surgical instruments with a instrument specific balanced spring with an footplate. This constructions allows a permantn contac of the footplate to the sclerotomy preventing leakage and by mechanical force the instrument cannot touch the retina without additional force in a tonized eye.
Results: We can demonstrate the construction of Geuder in surgical procedures on enucleated porcine eyes and in daily surgical live in its funcionality during surgery preventing unattended touches of the retina.
Conclusions: Safer surgical procedures especially for beginners can be achieved by this small modification of instruments.
