Confocal Scanning Laser Tomography

Confocal scanning laser tomography was adapted from microscopy techniques and introduced as an ophthalmic instrument in the 1980s. Over the last decade it has rapidly developed into a clinically useful technique with over 2000 users worldwide. The initial applications were intended for the objective assessment of the optic nerve head and the development of glaucomatous optic neuropathy. Recent developments permit the quantification of topographic change, important in both the management and diagnosis of the glaucomas. New analytical techniques also allow for the imaging and quantification of retinal edema. The future will see the implementation of adaptive optics that will enable unprecedented resolution of both the optic nerve and retina.
