Degeneration and Regeneration within the Eye. The Role of TGFb2
Purpose: The tissues within the eye show nearly no regeneration following surgical interventions. Allogeneic transplants are not rejected. The microenvironment especially TGFb2 plays an important role in this respect. In addition, following injection of antigens into the anterior eye segment, a reaction of delayed type hypersensitivity is inhibited (ACAID = anterior chamber associated immune deviation). In old rd-mice the TGFb2-levels are significantly decreased, and the animals lose ACAID. In contrast, in patients with POAG, the levels are highly increased. The purpose of this study was 1. to investigate the reaction of eye tissues to allogenic transplants in old rd-mice, and 2. the reaction of the trabecular meshwork (TM) to perfusion with elevated TGFb levels.
