Measurement of the Oxygen Saturation in Retinal Vessels in Normals and Diabetics after Glucose Provocation

Purpose: To investigate whether a provoced change of glucose level leads to differnt alterations in the oxygen saturation in retinal vessels in normals and diabetics.
Method: The arterial and venous oxygen saturation were determined by means of the Jena Imaging Spectrometer. In the study, 20 healthy volunteers (middle age of 25 years, min.19 max. 57 years) and 27 diabetics (middle age 44 years, min.20, max. 68 years) were included. All diabetice had no marks of diabetic-specific alterations at the retina. The blood sugar level was increased by giving of 20 g glucose dissolved in water in diabetics and of 75 g glucose in normals. The oxygen saturation and the blood sugar were measured before the provocation as well as 30, 60, 90 and 120 minutes after provocation.
Results: In healthy volunteers, after 30 minutes a small but significant reduction of the venous oxygen saturation was detectable in comparison with the starting value. No difference in venous oxygen saturation could be determined between the basic measurement and measurements at 60, 90, and 120 min.
