Abstract
Abstract

Congenital Eyelid Abnormalities: Classification and Treatment

Katowitz J. A.
Professor of Ophthalmology, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and The Scheie Eye Institute; Director of Oculoplastic and Orbital Surgery, The Edwin and Fannie Gray Hall Center for Human Appearance, University of Pennsylvania Medical Center

Congenital eyelid abnormalities present significant reconstructive challenges. Developmental anomalies occur due to disruption of the orderly sequence of migration and differentiation of the facial processes as they form the upper and lower eyelid folds. Mechanisms responsible for this disruption can include failure of fusion or dehiscence of the folds, amniotic bands, alterations in Vitamin A metabolism or problems with migration of the neural crest cells. Genetic aberrations can also produce recognizable syndromic eyelid problems. The classification of congenital eyelid abnormalities and their surgical management will be reviewed.
