The Effectiveness of PTK Treatment in Corneal Scars

Purpose: Anterior corneal scar can significantly reduce vision and cause discomfort. Decrease clarity, diplopia and glare often cannot be corrected with spectacles or contact lenses. Phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK) is an alternative to penetrating keratoplasty (PK) as method of corneal scars removing.
Purpose: The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of PTK in corneal scars of various origins.
Patients and methods: We studied 22 corneas in 20 patients in whom PTK was carried out for corneal scars removing. In analyzed group of patients there were 9 men and 11 women. The patients’ age ranged from 21 to 67 years (mean 46,8). Scars were caused by inflammatory processes (10 eyes), by trauma (7eyes), and after removal of foreign bodies (5eyes). PTK was used in all corneas after the qualification using confocal microscopy examination, with excimer lasers MEL 60 and MEL 70 (Asclepion Meditec). We analyzed the UCVA and BCVA improvement after the operation in comparison to before it, the change of corneal topography as well as diminishing of subjective symptoms. The follow-up period ranged from 6 to 48 months.
Results: The UCVA improved in about 45% of eyes but the BSCVA in 79% of eyes. The corneal topography showed the differences depending on the depth, size and location of the scar. Some patients needs to repeated the procedure. In 17 eyes the subjective symptoms disappeared, i
