International Ophthalmology - Vision 2020

Purpose: In 1999 the programme "Vision 2020 - The Right to Sight, Global Initiative for the Elimination of Avoidable Blindness by the Year 2020" was launched by World Health Organisation (WHO), International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), governments and non governmental organizations (NGO´s). The reason was the high number of blind worldwide, to date 50 Mio with an annual increase of 1 to 2 Mio. 4 years after the launch we must query, if obvious successes can be monitored.
Method, Results: The programme Vision 2020 was started on a global level, later in-augurated for the 5 continents and country level. Official launches with participation of politicians, press and the public were geared at attracting the interest of the public and of patients. International or national workshops have produced strategies for the coming 5 years for countries and districts for practical implementation of the programme. Cooperations at international level under participation of WHO, Donor Countries, NGO´s, thrive to mobilize the necessary financial resources. Lions International Programme - Sight First- is a major donor, but also drug companies like Merck, Sharp and Dome and Pfizer donate medicines for mass therapy in Africa and Asia. Ivermectin for the treatment of onchocerciasis and azithromycin for treatment of trachoma are of greatest interest.
