Abstract

Long-term Results after Cerclage Surgery with Arruga Suture

Dept. of Ophthalmology, Martin-Luther University, Halle

Purpose: Several early and late complications have been described since introduction of ceclage surgery using a supramid suture (Amemiya et al., Lommatzsch et al., Lund et al., Mc Auley et al.). Due to cutting the supramid suture after occuring scleral erosions and appearing of the supramid suture at the fundus long term results of sceral penetrating and crossing the bulbus by the supramid suture, which is only covered by the retina ("Wäscheleinenphänomen", Meyer-Schwickerath), could not be described so far. The case report of a patient 20 years after cerclage surgery with arruga-suture and 'Wäscheleinenphänomen' will be qualified as follows:
Method: At the ophthalmic hospital of the University in Halle (Germany) cerclage surgery has been applied at 277 bulbi using a arruga suture, with or without a seal, from 1970 until 1984. In one case we had to cut the suture due to a scleral erosion. A today 63 year old femal patient with a high myopia (D -14.0 OU) suffering from complete retinal detachment including several holes had ophthalmic surgery using a arruga-suture-cerclage and parallel limbal seal at her left eye in 1983. Postoperative visual acuity was 10/20. Retina was attached. In 2002 phakoemulsifikation with posterior chamber lens due to a cataracta corticalis was done externally.
Results: The patient came back for examination in our hospital in 2003 first since 1988. A comlpete skleral and ch
