Age-related Macular Degeneration: the Antioxidant Systems

Purpose: This study is based on the particularities of oxidative stress induced by age- related macular degeneration (ARMD), cataract or both ARMD and cataract considering the production of superoxide anion O2, initiator of reactive oxygen species and free radicals. We studied the antioxidant systems, in order to establish a correlation between these enzymes and the occurrence of ARMD and cataract diseases.
Method: The comparative study of the main blood enzymatic oxidative stress markers (superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase) was done on four series of patients, both males and females aged of 50-80 years old.
Series I: 40 patients (30 females and 10 males) diagnosed with ARMD; series II: 35 patients (20 females and 15 males) diagnosed with ARMD and cataract; series III: 40 patients (25 females and 15 males) diagnosed with cataract and 30 healthy individuals (15 females and 15 males) as control group. The patients with systemic diseases such as: diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipemia or with other ocular diseases were excluded.
Results: The group of subjects diagnosed with ARMD (series I) the antioxidant systems were significantly decreased compared with the subjects diagnosed with cataract (series III).
