Axial Length and Branch Retinal Vein Occlusion

Purpose: Branch Retinal Vein Occlusion (BRVO) is the most common retinal vascular condition, after the diabetic retinopathy. To establish if there is a correlation between the axial length and BRVO.
Method: The axial lengths have been measured with an A-scan in 25 patients that had been diagnosed with BRVO. The values were compared with those obtained in a control group, consisting in 25 subjects that matched the BRVO group in age, systemic arterial hypertension and diabetes mellitus. The results were statistically analyzed by using the Student t test.
Results: The mean axial length of the affected eyes in the BRVO group was 22.81mm. The difference between the affected and the fellow eye was not statistically significant (p>0.05). The mean axial length in the control group was 23.45mm. The difference between the axial lengths in the BRVO group and the control group was statistically significant (p<0.05).
Conclusions: The shorter axial length is a local risk factor for BRVO.
