Refractive Effects of Holmium:YAG-laser Thermokeratoplasty in Rabbits' Eyes

Purpose: Non-contact laser photothermal keratoplasty may provide a new alternative for the treatment of hyperopia. We studied results refractive effects noncontact holmium:YAG laserthermokeratoplasty in rabbits eyes.
Method: 20 rabbits eyes were treated with a holmium laser (pulsed Ho:YAG,2.08 microns, 200 microseconds). All rabbits underwent a follow-up of 12 months and cycloplegic refractive measurements were carried out.
Results: The corneas were steeped in all cases. The mean change in refraction (spherical equivalent) was 2,93±0,47D (range 2,0 to 4,5D) at 1 months and 2.1±0.53D (1.0 to 3.0D) at 1 year. Regression between 1 and 12 months was at mean 0.71±0.33D. There were no clinically significant complications.
Conclusions: Laser thermokeratoplasty can acutely steep and flatten the cornea in rabbits' eyes.
